One of the hottest antique markets today is the insurgence of collectors chasing metal writing instruments. They are beautiful, sturdy , intrinsic and often well over 100 years old. Prices have been all over the map for a while. Savvy collectors are finally noticing that these were the instruments of the well - to - do - crowd. Many pieces were very expensive in those days and quantities of nice examples can be quite few. They can be flashy pieces of art with tonnes of collector appeal. Some instruments border on the lines of being custom pieces or short production, which can easily increase values. Sampson & Mordans were a luxury mainstay in the UK for over 140 years and quality was always first class. the collector base is ever growing. This collapsible pencil is a very tough find and was a luxury item , even for a pencil. Rare.

If you collect fancy mechanical pencils and pens , the MORDAN name is a popular name to start with. Fine quality materials such as gold, gold filled , sterling and quality plate were always used. The patent number on most pencils goes back to the earliest patent registered in the mid 1800's. The earliest Mordans are always marked S. Mordan or something similar, this one is marked " Mordan Everpoint " and " Gold Filled ". Dates to about 1920. Mint condition in the box. Not monogrammed. Box is in outstanding condition as well. This is a unisex pencil, but targeted after a male audience. Other models were made with a more feminine touch. Very rare in this type of quality and combination. Mechanical pencils in this era were workhorses, so finding mint examples are certainly a prize in itself with excellent appreciation potential. ( VAIS CODE 50405 ) Scarce.

Period circa 1925 - 1934. Beautiful undamaged condition with noting of a very light professional grind mark to the top flare. Stands 5 " high by about 3 " wide. The colours are powerful to say the least. It is an extreme cobalt sommerso into amber. The upper is cobalt while the bottom is cased amber. Hand blown and cut and polished. Possibly unique. This pen holder is simply a MASTERPIECE. The best of the best. Trying to nail down the attribution is very difficult. The Italians are known for their sommersos, but not so much for their custom cutting, especially of this nature. Moser glassworks in the 1920's and 1930's however executed many striking glass commissions for the Austrian design cliques. Though Moser is not known for sommerso glass , they did on occasion make pieces using this technique. The execution is extremely top notch and disciplined. The colours are the boldest that I have ever seen on any art deco piece of glass. This piece may have accepted dip ink , but shows no signs of it. It would also be pretty impractical to use this consistently as the ink levels would always change. I am inclined to say that this is just a very decorative fountain pen holder for the office desk. This is the first that I have ever encountered. Quality speaks for itself. It belongs in a glass museum and should attract more collectors from the glass and art deco fields than that of the fountain pen clan. I'd like to pair this item up, if you have one let me know. EXTREMELY RARE. Serious offers considered, I have no price data or any items to source to as to value. Considered unique. No markings and unsigned. Better IN HAND than pictures show.

Made in about 1985. Issue price of $550.00 USD. This one comes with the original inside plastic box and the outside cardboard box, comes also with the warranty book and card. Also included is 16 ink cartridges. The tip is a medium fine 4810 18 karat white gold with platinum inlay. Replacement value of the tip alone is $250 ++ . This pen appears un-inked and unused but with no certain guarantee. The cap and barrel are 0.925 sterling silver. The barrel is nicely monogrammed for " Michael A Byrne " & " 15 years H Y A B ". Despite the monogramming it is a very excessively rare pen and is seldom found for sale anywhere on the internet. See my other pens for a 1443 solitaire in gold vermeil. The box will hold either 1 or 2 pens. Or it might have had a pencil included, but this is uncertain as well. The box alone is worth $100. A nice package offering.
