Published and circa 1904. Measures 7 " by 9 " by 1 1/2 " thick. Choice excellent to near mint condition. This book , Edited by John Wesley Hanson , gives commentary and live eyewitness accounts of the burned paddlewheel steamer .." The General Slocum " . This disaster nearly comsumed the whole congregation of St. Marks German Lutheran Church as they were going for an annual picnic on the shores of Long Island. In a nutshell , the Slocum had a bad safety record for running aground a few times. Additionally, the safety equipment was horrible, rottened out lifejackets, lifeboats locked up and wired so tightly that they couldn't get them loose. Gasoline was also aboard and so was straw ! 1,102 perished, which was New York's worst disaster until the alleged airline attacks and peculiar demolition of the World Trade Centres on Sept , 11 , 2001 ...97 years later.

Written by Thomas Clarkson, M.A. Mr. Clarkson was also a public figure in the early uprising and abolishment of the slave trade which led up to the Civil War in 1860. Published in New York City , 111 Water Street in 1806. Quakerism was a strict Brethren gathering much like the Plymouth Brethren. They associtaed themselves with much legalisms as interpreted from the Bible. All are touched upon such as what clothing to wear, what type of furniture to have and how meetings are to be conducted. Practically anything that was " fun " was forbidden , such as novels, dancing, gaming, gambling, types of music and practically everything else under the sun was included in that as well. The book is in sound very fine to excellent condition. The pages are still secured in the premium leather binding. The inner cover pages are spotted with age. Near the back some of the pages are water stained, but not badly. There is a small worm hole on the back cover. Overall I would give it a 7 / 10 on a survival rating scale. This is an extremely important and rare reference into the early church meetings of the people commonly known now as the " Quakers " . Superb and excellent and informative reading, NOT THE LEAST BIT BORING ....and very easy to read. Measures a nice 5 " by 8 " by 1 " thick and not very heavy.

Written by John H. Williams , 1910, Published 1911 by G P Putnam's & Sons , New York, London, Tacoma. I am assuming that this book was printed in the Tacoma office. Measures 10 " by 7 " by 1/2 " thick. This spectacular reference came in three finishes, leather bound, cloth bound and embosssed paper bound, which is what this book is. Williams was so proud of this masterpiece achievement that he made it available " subject to class " so to speak. Even this paper version cost 75 cents back in 1911, which was a lot of money. Just think , it cost 3 pieces of territorial gold quarters ! The cloth & leather cost $1.50 & $2.50 respectively. This book covers and shows every vantage point of the MT. Rainier. Black and white and colour filter photographs grace practically every page. Famous artists paintings are also covered, as well as the many hiking and climbing expeditions up the Mountain. Also shows the VERY dangerous glaciers around the mountain via superb picture taking. Info elaborates on the water channels around the mountain, the hydro electric projects, the forestry, the roads, the parks, etc, etc The most complete and beautiful reference on Mt Rainier of the time, and possibly ever. Just reading the book puts you on the volcano mountain and enrobes you with the cold crisp snow and air. In excellent condition or better overall. Belongs in a Puyallup museum ! A very rare book.
