Westley is well known for their guns world wide and is now celebrating their 200th year in business. Though not known for fishing tackle, they were notorious for copying Hardy's designs in lures and fly reels and centrepin reels . Often when they were unmarked and held side to side by each other you can't tell who made which reel, Hardy or Westley. It is believed that Westley ventured into fishing tackle after losing contracts to the Enfield Rifle Manufacturer. Nothing was really wrong with Westley's guns, except that they were well crafted and pricey compared to other makers. Finding any piece of tackle with the Westley Stamp is a rare item indeed, as they didn't make fine tackle that long. Secondly, Hardy started to tighten its' belt and became prolific at the patent office after World War One. Price: $135.00 USD

A little dirty and used but that's how they come. I view these lures far more desirable than common mass produced Heddon lures , ( though I do respect that some Heddons are indeed rare ). I wouldn't be surprized that if you grouped all the Heddon sucker minnows together and all the poconos together that the poconos lure would easily be the scarcer of the two. All original threading and twisted rope wrapped double handles. The first line guide is a large trumpet line guide. The next line guide is a DOUBLE opposite sided trumpet guide. This was incorporated into the rod to allow for the possible bowing of the wood to keep the wood as straight as possible for as long as possible. The tip guide is missing and obviously would've been a double tip guide as well. ( I have currently tracked down a few replacement tips of this era but won't be able to get around to this " fix ' until late April. ) This rod is in superb choice excellent condition or better , minus the double tip guide. No damage or anything else to report. Even without the tip these rods are extremely rare. Billiard cue rods represent the highest class of fishing rod available in the United States during the Civil War era. Worthy of any fishing museum or serious collection. Despite not having the original tip it is what it is and hopefully by mid spring either this rod will be gone or I'll have it restored with a contemporary tip. Extremely rare. Price: $500.00 USD

This rod has a very odd rattan or composite type material handle. The lines guides are double soldered circles while the tip guide is a triple-circle. The ferrules are brass while the handle section is nickel plated brass. Rod has most likley been restored in the 60's or 70's by way of repaint. It is done very nice and only helps this piece. The handle section is patented for 1887 and 1889 , which might indicate that this fly rod is pre-1900 made. Overall a very nice offering of a fly rod used over 100 years ago. These were much sturdier than the bamboo rods of that era. Price: $189.00 USD

Comes with a canvas cover and velvet lined carrier. marked on the handle " Abercrombie & Fitch New York. " Rod appears much older than circa 1900. It is extensively wrapped and varnished. The reel seat is nickel silver , as well as the butt end, the ferrules and the " TRUMPET " line guides. The ferrules are pinned construction. Quality is high. This rod is in excellent condition or better. No damage, no missing pieces, no loose threads, etc. One tip is very slightly bowed. The nice preservation of this rod owes to the owner and protective system that it initially came with. The cork handle is all original and smells nice and old and musty. A nice early American rod that boasts trumpet line guides ! Price: $425.00 USD

This rod is in nice shape but need a small amount of restoration. One agate standard line guide is missing. Secondly the male ferrule looks to have been pulled with pliers in the past buggering the ferrule, thus needing some smoothing, revarnishing and rethreading. The cork handle is all original and has seen usage , but is still respectable. On the handle it is marked " Payne " and sold by " Von Lengerke & Antoine of Chicago ". With just a small amount of restoration this rod is a really sharp unit. Tough to find one in any condition. Scarce. NINE pictures in total. Price: $400.00 USD

Condition of this rod is superb. Some pieces of the hideous copper tape criss - cross binding has been lost , but when you look at the rod you can't even tell ! The tip is original but not finished with the patented criss - cross taping. The grip is also patented for March 28, 1905. The ferrules are pinned nickel silver much like Ed & Jim Payne. Quality is overall fantastic. The first line guide is nickel with agate insert. The tip guide is also nickel plated agate. All the inner guides are snake guides. The handle is cork , all original with a nice pleasant aroma to go along with it. The material of the rod is full bamboo, however the first section might be wood but it is very tough to tell with all the wrapping. Wheeler's rod were initially very expensive and didn't sell well. Subsequently, ALL WHEELER Rods are outrageously rare finds and worthy of the finest and most eccentric collections. This rod is probably unique as per discussions with a few collectors and sporting auction houses. There is no price data history for this type of Wheeler rod. Each section is 18 1/4 " , making the total length of the rod 108 " or a standard 9 feet long. If you want a truly unique antique fly rod that no collector or museum probably has, then this is it. The obscure Connecticut makers' fly rods represent some of the most coveted fly fishing tackle produced in the USA. Pieces like this were made for the most elite and wealthiest individuals.
