Circa 1930`s, made in San Fransisco , California. Possibly made as early as 1925. The Merle Faber name is almost entirely lost on Obscurity. This company or small firm made a very small match of rare art deco metalwares sometime pre-war. By 1939 Merle Faber was designing model scale toy trains in San Mateo , California. Finding either the trains or the metalwares is quite nearly impossible. The dinner sets in extreme art deco design rival that of the Paris french makers . Construction was quadruple silver plated brass or copper , but appears to be copper due to the slight bendablity of the metal. This creme and sugar is in good condition except for the fact that the sugar is dented on the bottom, it can be pressed back into shape using a proper technique. The LID is missing on the sugar as well, if the lid was present the value would be even more than what is asking, despite this omission, the set still looks great and is still very excessively rare. Merle Faber art deco ware is much better made and looks dapper than the mass producers of the time of Manning Bowman , Chase and Farberware. Many pieces of this set reside in various decorative arts museums in the USA and abroad.

Measures 8 1/2 " high by 4 " diameter. Made by the Hem group of Brussels and Paris , which imported fine black jet glass from Czechoslovakia and employed only the finest and refined designers to apply the art deco decorations , Michael Herman was probably there the longest and it would be highly likely that Jean Dunand and the Despres brothers got their dibs in there too. This piece is unsigned . Some hem pieces are signed or even double signed , yet about half of all known inventory is unsigned. Regardless , this is very fine art deco work and is the finest art deco design decorating from the early 1930's.
What makes this piece stand out is that it is in PRACTICALLY MINT CONDITION , which is really unheard of for this series of art deco , there is only a small aberration in the silver near the top underside rim shown in the last photo. When This piece was discovered the silver was totally black and oxidized and you couldn't even tell what is was . The tarnish came off rather effortlessly to reveal this gem , which has been in storage for practically most of its' life . TOP NOTCH and very rare . Hem items should be considered unique, you never really see doubles of a same design, unless you have a matched vase set or something. If you love art deco , this area of glass still has potential to reach high stratospheric prices . Any piece of Hem glass is a real treasure , a mint piece can be a centrepiece . Set of 5 , undamaged but some have seen more wear than others. The insides have silver wash lining , some of them with all of it and some with most of it rubbed off from washing. It is obvious that whoever used these in the past just kept using the same ones over and over again. Circa 1930's with mellow deco influence. The heights of all the cordials are slightly different, amplifying the handmade element that went into these. measures roughly 2 3/8 ' h and 1 1/2 " wide.
