This is the rare Kuchler pattern series. Montagu # 676. NGC has graded 4 pieces ....... 1 in 63, 2 in 64, and 1 in 65. The guinea is guilt gold over base metal as far as I know. Rates as R-4 or R-5 rarity, probably closer to R-5 but this can always change as pieces get certified. A nice offering for the guinea collector. The old NGC is in excellent unscratched condition. Graded in 1991.

Sometimes I'll receive emails from people demanding me tell them why I claim this or that coin is undergraded when it is in a third party holder graded by three so - called " expert graders ". Firstly , welcome to the real world of coin collecting. Just go anywhere online to learn the phrase " buy the coin and not the holder ". At the National Antique Centre, we offer coins properly graded or very nice for the grade. At times we'll attempt to give you the absolute bonafide grade of the coin despite the holder. We do not sell overgraded slabs or certified coins. Continuing, overgrading is commonplace. Deep discounted slabs mean that the coin is overgraded and the seller wants to shake the coin off at near the true value, or take a loss. Go online to find grading surveys where companies get coins graded by three different companies and the coins all come back different grades, sometimes the same, or all over the map, or body bagged by some and not others. So essentially , study your field and learn grading and view as many coins as possible. Some coins are truly only one grade, many coins will be either a nice 63 or low 64. Many companies take a conservative approach, which really isn't coin grading. Many companies will say a coin is VF when actually it is a true XF, hey ........ that's great for the buyer but the coin still isn't graded properly. Some companies will now and again " push " the grade or round up. This is good and bad; GOOD if the coin has selling factors such as nice original toning, surfaces that warrant a premium, GOOD OR BAD if the price spread is significant. Meaning that gains or losses on a coin could be substantial depending if you are the seller or buyer. Learn to grade , learn to assess all aspects of a particular coin. LEARN STANDARD DEVIATION STATISTICS. Once you can grade and want to third party certify, stick with grading companies that grade within your standard of deviation, which should be + / - 0.50 grading points for mintstate coins. If you are off, EITHER the company is making mistakes or YOU are making mistakes. Mintstate standard deviations should never be more than one point off. Circulated standard deviations should never be more than 7 points off. A true AU58 shouldn't EVER grade AU50, etc. ******* Now this coin, I look at it and in 10 seconds the grade of 64 registers. I take 1, 2 and 3 minutes...and the same grade registers. I show it to other dealers and collectors, 64, 64, 64. Must be an MS64 , thus an undergraded coin. Or very nice for the grade. Standrad deviation is 1.0 . Conclusion, a very nice coin for the 63 grade and with a strong consensus of 64 quality. Though the 1787 coinage is a dump issue or recoin issue, really nice ones are still harder to come by on the market. Either collectors have them or nice ones are rarer than first expected.
