Missing the metal cap, which is often very rusted by this time. I've seen prices all over the map on this one. Competition on the internet will show the highs and lows on this item. The bowls of the glasses are cranberry while the bases are clear. They are small , thick and chunky. Hand made as well. These glasses were often found in pubs. When a patron had his glass filled , one would drink the whole thing and then " SLAM " the glass on the counter asking for More ! ...thus the name slammers. Both glasses are in excellent condition, one is better than the other however. One glass has wearing of the gold gilt rim lines at the top and as well has a soda glass flaw in the base. This is from the production and is not damage and it is also not a flake, the glass is still all intact, but there is some pressure flaw there. All around a nice early surviving matching pair of ale glasses. Beer glasses in general come in all shapes and sizes from the 19th century on, some with very specific purposes. Measures 4 " by 3 " h, done in " alabastro " technique. has pretty shades of pink and some mottled white within the glass. This was purposely done to mimic real alabaster stone. Later examples were done in all one colour , maybe for the customers likings , but this wasn't the real intention. This earlier piece is the true original with the intentions of really making the apple as if it were really carved out of Italian stone or marble. Scarce in this finish. Offers considered. Back in the late 1960's gold was about $45 ounce so using a full gold leaf sheet was easier to expend than a full gold leaf sheet at $1,325 oz as it is today. One fish is generic stickered while the other is missing or didn't get a sticker. Barbini has used probably a dozen or so different stickers in long career. Though fish and birds and ducks are now relatively common from Murano ; earlier pieces created by the founding 20th Century glassblowing masters are tougher to locate. It takes approximately 28 minutes to create a handmade fish today with mediocre color. The masters like Barbini and his pupils needed maybe 35 to 42 minutes to create a masterpiece. Murano Island is located about 2.3 miles off the coast of Venice , Italy. This set comes from a fresh to the market collection that has been enjoyed by a previous collector for several decades.
