Collectors often putting together sets from pocket change will find that the last dates to come across are the coins from 1970. This is because they were minted in substantially lower quantities. The P/L set is a viable way to get all the coins from this year in spectacular uncirculated condition. They are in close to " proof " quality condition, thus they are called prooflikes. They were specially struck this way at the mint. Sometimes a coin was so well struck that even experts will argue whether the coin is a true Proof as opposed to a prooflike..... and most rightfully so ! These sets are superb quality and have rarely been outside of the envelope. Often sets would come out of the envelope , be shown around, banged on tables, etc.... often dinging the coins through the package and thusly lowering the grade or condition. The mint ( RCM ) , tried to … This set has got to be the Ugly Duckling of the Royal Canadian Mint. Minted to comemmorate 90 years of striking coins in Canada. The mint ( RCM ) , tried to mimic the then ugly 1908 matte specimen set produced 90 years ago. They certainly did a good job ! Though the proposed mintage was 50,000 sets , the RCM was already taking sets back from some sellers and destroying them. It is not believed anywhere near 50,000 sets are in the hands of the public. Grading companies from the USA have been known to " body bag " single coins from these sets due to their initial response and inexperience with these coins. That has since changed however. Single certified coins from the set have been found trading to upwards of $50 a coin. Now that the word is out that these sets are scarce, collectors have flocked to insert these into their collection or investment porfolio. Comes with its' original outer leather display box. We have the $1,000,000.00 coin, the $3.00 coin, $20.00 , $30, $300 and this ... the 3 cent piece. This coin commemorates Canada's first beaver stamp. The coin is superb Gem proof, struck in sterling silver and 24 Karat gold plated. It is very hard to keep this set in inventory, especially since many dealers rip out the 3 cents coin and leave the commemorative stamp and stamp medallion to fend for itself.
